Is a disabled body like a machine that needs modification?

Many amazing technologies exist today which would lead us to believe that. Advanced prosthetics, wheelchairs, and speaking machines make it possible for people with disabilities to function better.

However, not everyone wants to think of themselves as a defective machine. Prejudice and stigma can prevent us from seeing that what we call disabilities are really only different ways of being human. To say it simply, both the individual and society may need help: both the wheelchair and the wheelchair ramps are necessary.
